September 17, 1939 — July 20, 2023

Lois Riveland passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 20, 2023 at the age of 83 at the skilled nursing unit of Presbyterian Manor in Topeka, KS.

A memorial service will be held at Our Savior's Lutheran Church at 10 AM on Monday, July 31, 2023. The service will be preceded for one hour by a visitation. A livestream of the service will be available at youtube.com/@oslctopeka for possible home computer or TV viewing. Entombment in the Mount Hope Mausoleum will follow the service at 1:00 p.m. Dove Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota Ave. is the funeral home assisting the family.

Lois was born to Lea (VandeWalle) and Leslie Kimball on September 17, 1939 in Noonan, NDak. She grew up on a farm near Noonan, attended elementary school in Noonan, and graduated from high school in Noonan in 1957. She then attended Minot College of Business in Minot, NDak. Upon certification, she worked for C.I.T. , a loan company in Minot.

Lois married Allan Riveland on Aug. 26, 1962 in Noonan. Shortly thereafter, they loaded a U-Haul trailer and headed for the University of Wyoming in Laramie where Allan had received a graduate assistantship to study Mathematics. Lois was soon employed by the Education Dept. of the University.

After receiving his Masters degree, Allan accepted a Math teaching position at North Dakota State University (NDSU) in Fargo, NDak. While in Fargo our oldest children, Chad (1965) and Randy (1967}, were born so they had a short opportunity to witness the lovely winters in North Dakota.

In 1968, the family returned to Laramie, Wyoming where Allan would pursue a doctorate in Math at the U of Wyo. After completing the doctorate in 1971, the family was lured to the Washburn Math Dept. in Topeka. KS by a previous NDSU colleague, Dr. Richard Shermoen, now the Chair of the Dept.

In Topeka, our third son, Ryan, arrived on the scene in 1974. Lois was proudly a stay-at-home Mom. Throughout their school days Lois did much volunteering and was very active in school related responsibilities and activities. Her life revolved around the three boys and their activities. Most of her focus in school and at home was on lovingly making their lives more responsible, enjoyable, and meaningful.

Lois was also active in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, where she enjoyed many years in the Sarah Group, served on committees, volunteered where needed, and was for 47 years, an active member of the church Alter Guild. She and Allan were active Civic theater attendees for almost 50 years. Branson and the Colorado Rockies were popular travel destinations.

Lois's husband Allan survives after enjoying 61 years of togetherness in marriage. Also surviving are three sons, Chad (Karen) Riveland, Randy Riveland, and Ryan (Kelly) Riveland. Grandchildren and step-grandchildren include Brynn (Jordan) Henderson, Kalen Samples, Jacob Samples, Cutter Riveland, Kyla Riveland, Beverly (Joe) Young, and Kate Buckner. Step-great-grandchildren are Isabella Buckner, Annabel Young, and Millie Young. Also surviving is brother, James (Linda) Kimball, and sister Dorothy Dinesen. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Providing gracious care and concern during the final months and days of life for Lois were the staffs of Cedarhurst Senior Living, Presbyterian Manor Skilled Nursing, and Midland Care Hospice. Nurse Nancy Riddle was exceptionally kind and considerate and became a dear and important friend.
