Lola Widau "Nanny" Whitaker, 92, of Topeka, passed away on Sunday, November 14, 2010 at her residence. She was born on a farm north of Carbondale on January 2, 1918, the daughter of Charles H. and Mary F. Carls Widau. She graduated from Towhead Grade School and Carbondale High School.
Lola married John C. Whitaker on September 10, 1937 in Topeka. They lived in Lawton, OK and Paris, TX. They later moved to Lyndon before coming to Topeka in 1952 where she spent the rest of her life. She worked five seasons at Hallmark Cards, then became self-employed with rental property. Lola was a member of the Topeka Travel Club and traveled with her sisters. She enjoyed traveling, taking care of her yard and flowers and reading to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her husband, John of 47 years, preceded her in death in May, 1984. She was also preceded in death by her six siblings. Survivors include three children; Mary Jo (Don) Swietek, John C. (Mary Jane) Whitaker II, Kay Guerrero all of Topeka, 8 grandchildren, Gregg Swietek, Stacy Guerrero, Tim Swietek, Toni Brown, Lorrie Long, John Whitaker III, Todd Guerrero, David Guerrero, 13 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson, one brother, Fred Widau of Burlingame, and one sister, Maxine Lagerstrom of Darby, MT.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Shawnee Center Cemetery, Wakarusa, KS. Lola will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel.
