Lorand Blaine"Buck" Hand, 85, Topeka, died Thursday, September 9, 2004 at his home.
He was born on July 26, 1919 in Claudell KS, to Roy and Edna Wheatley Hand. He graduated in 1937 from Kensington High School.
Lorand served in the Civilian Conservation Corps from October 1939 to February 1942. He then served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945.
Lorand was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia in 1945. While there, he met his future wife, Sgt. Fanny Sturup, from Rochester, New York.
In 1949, Lorand joined the National Guard in Hays, KS. He transferred to Topeka in 1962. He also served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970. Lorand retired after thirty years of service as a Chief Warrant Officer Four, in 1979.
In Hays, he was a charter member of the Elks Club, president of Kiwanis in 1960, and VFW Commander, life member in 1962.
Mr. Hand was a musician. He played with the Ted Smith Band from 1953 to 1962 as a drummer, piano player and vocalist.
Lorand married Fanny Sturup in Hays, March 11, 1950.
She suvives.
He was preceeded in death by his son, Aaron D. Hand, and two sisters, Madeline Lambert, and LaRena Hand.
Other survivors include:two sisters; Arloa Otteman, Norma Van Skiver and her husband Frank; one brother, Cloyce Hand and his wife Rose; two daughters, Lorriane Bridges and Loranda Figgs and her husband Steve; six grand children and eight great grandchildren.
Mr. Hand will lie in state after 1:00 p.m., Sunday, September 12, 2004 at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel where the family will recieve friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, September 13, 2004 at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel with burial to follow at Penwell-Gabel Memorial Park Cemetery.
