Loren L. Ronnekamp, 81, of Topeka, KS passed away Sunday, November 2, 2014. He was born October 31, 1933 at Hastings, Nebraska to Raymond and Lenora (Komrofske) Ronnekamp. He grew up in Hastings, NE. Throughout his younger life he lived in several other towns in Nebraska: McCook, Gothenburg, and North Platte. In 1975 after both of his parents passed away, his older sister moved him to Greeley, CO to be close to the remaining family. Then after his sister passed away, he went to live with his niece in Las Vegas, NV. After three years in Las Vegas, he came to live in Topeka, Kansas so that he could be close to his older brother, Dale and another niece.
Loren loved Jesus and loved to attend church. He was confirmed at the age of 17 at Zion Lutheran Church in Hastings, NE. He attended Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in North Platte, a Presbyterian church in Greeley, CO and after moving to Topeka, he attended First Lutheran Church.
Loren is an amazing testimony to God's grace, mercy, love, strength and goodness. His smile was contagious and lit up a room. He was born with Cerebral Palsy due to a birth injury and doctors said he would not live past the age of 10, but that did not stop him from being an active and productive person for 81 years. He was not allowed to attend public schools so his mom and dad hired a tutor to teach him at home. He learned to read, write and do arithmetic. He had an excellent memory – if anybody in the family needed to know a birthday, anniversary, a name, or even the make and model of a car they would ask Loren. Loren worked doing odd jobs at Schaefer Enterprises in Greeley, Colorado for 10 years and Opportunity Village in Las Vegas, NV for 2 years. He was very active in Special Olympics in North Platte and Greeley earning many medals. He loved to listen to music, go bowling and when he was younger he had a loom in his home which he weaved many rugs on.
He never married but lived with his younger sister, Cindy almost all of his life. They made a great team. The last 6 years he lived at Plaza West Care Center in Topeka, KS. He had many fun times there. Loren's family would like to express their greatest gratitude to Plaza West Care Center for taking such good care of him and treating him like he was their family!
His surviving family members include; older brother, Dale Ronnekamp of Topeka, KS; younger sister, Cindy Ronnekamp of Topeka, KS; 3 nieces; Lisa Mueller of Las Vegas, NV, Melanee Allison of Topeka, KS, and Karen Foxhoven of Des Moines, IA; 2 great-nephews, Jeffrey Mueller of Hawaii, Justin Allison of Topeka, KS, and several cousins.
Loren is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Lenora Ronnekamp; older sister, Donna Mueller, and nephew, Jeff Mueller.
Memorial Services will be held at Plaza West Care Center in the activities room on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at 2:00 p.m.
