Loretta L. Marvin

Long-time Topeka resident Loretta Marvin passed away peacefully in Overbrook on July 30, 2011. Loretta was born in 1925 to Alus and Ruth Stearley Prater and spent her early years in Colorado before moving with her family to Oregon, where she graduated from high school and in 1946 married Dick Andersen of Newport. That union produced a daughter, Linda.

Loretta married Phil Marvin, her second husband, in 1954 and moved to Manhattan, KS. Their 43-year marriage produced two children, David and Daniel, and ended with the death of Phil in 1998. It was at that time Loretta moved to Topeka to be near her daughter. She lived at Atria Hearthstone Retirement Community for 12 years before moving to Brookside Manor in Overbrook to be closer to her daughter. Loretta received both her B.S. in Education and her M.S. in Child Guidance and Counseling from Kansas State University.

Loretta and her family moved to Mogadishu, Somalia in 1968, where Phil worked for two years as an entomologist for the U.S. Agency for International Development. Upon returning to the U.S. in 1970, the Marvins settled in Lincoln, NE.

Loretta authored two comprehensive genealogies, one for each of her maternal grandparents' family trees. The research for these books required extensive travel throughout the United States and a trip to Bavaria to visit German relatives and search through old family records.

Loretta taught English at the American School in Balbek, Lebanon, before health issues forced her to return to the U.S. Later in her life, Loretta enjoyed trips with Phil to Australia, New Zealand, and China, as well as two extended road trips to Alaska.

Loretta loved music, sang in the church choir, and played the organ. Loretta was an active member of The Quill, a writer's club. She was also a member of the American Association of University Women and a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority.

Loretta is survived by her stepchildren, Dr. Frances Marvin Pearson and Phil Marvin, Jr. (Bob), her daughter Linda Andersen Montgomery, her sons David Marvin and Daniel Marvin, eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Loretta will be buried in Newport, OR. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Mental Health America. Cremation is planned.
