Lorne Archer Phillips

January 5, 1940 — November 27, 2021

Lorne Archer Phillips, 81, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, November 27, 2021, after a brave battle with Alzheimer's.

He was born January 5, 1940, in Edmonton, Alberta, the son of William D. and Alberta E. (Thoms) Phillips. He received a doctorate in 1973 from Washington State University.

Lorne was employed by the State of Kansas for 37 years, retiring in 2008 as the Director of Center for Health and Environmental Statistics.

Dr. Phillips attended the First Baptist Church of Topeka.

Lorne married Norma J. Rice on June 4, 1966, in Idabel, Oklahoma. She survives, along with his brothers, William J. Phillips (Kathleen), Vancouver, B.C., and G. Barry Phillips (Lena), Edmonton, Alberta; brother-in-law, Charles Rice; nephews David Phillips, Todd Phillips, Barry Barnett, Gordon Phillips, and Jeff Phillips; and nieces Deborah Phillips-Froese, Carolyn Williams, Loryssa Harris, Sheena Phillips, Pam Ashcroft, and Jill Dowding.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William D. Phillips and Alberta E. Phillips, and his sister Lorraine Dowding.

Lorne enjoyed playing racquetball, playing until in his late 70s. He was an avid reader; an enthusiastic supporter of KU basketball, the Royals, and the Chiefs; and a fan of action movies (while tolerating Norma's love of romance, comedy and musicals). He loved his family and played the role of "favorite uncle" to his nieces and nephews in Canada and the U.S. He was a gourmet cook and enjoyed hosting parties, notably the almost-annual Canada Day parties on July 1. Lorne was a loyal friend, a devoted husband, a loving son, a great brother, and a really fun uncle.

A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday, December 6, 2021 at Dove Cremations and Funerals, Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road in Topeka.
