Lyla (Roepke) Schrock

Lyla (Roepke) Schrock died on Saturday, November 24, 2007 at age 98 in Topeka of complications of pneumonia and heart failure. Lyla was born in Riley Co., KS on April 28, 1909 to Frank and Amelia (Weber) Roepke. She married John Edward Schrock of Wilmore on September 1, 1935. They lived in Coldwater for several years. Ed became the County Engineer for Comanche County before moving to Topeka in 1941. In 1946 Ed started taking classroom photos in the Topeka elementary schools; Lyla was his full-time partner in this business for 25 years. A lover of irises, her gardening was therapy and she was the sole church gardener. When friends or relatives were sick or overworked, she brought dinner to them. She will be remembered for her dry Roepke wit and twinkling eyes, and her total love, compassion, forgiveness, and generosity -- plus her love of ice cream. In the last few years, she made nearly 600 knitted hats for the homeless. She was a member of the Highland Park Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and husband Ed, who died in 1994. She is survived by her daughter, Janet Hubbard, of Santa Rosa, CA, and her grandson, Gregory Hubbard, of Oakland, CA, and over 30 nephews and nieces. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 8, 2007 at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel. Private inurnment will take place at a later date. Lyla will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, December 7, 2007 at the funeral home.
