Marcella Josephine Buchmeier, 93, Topeka, passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at Aldersgate Village.
Marcella was born March 18, 1920 in Irving, Kansas, the daughter of Adolph A. and Carrie A. (Luznicky) Kratochvil. She graduated from Hays High School.
She began her career with Southwestern Bell in Hays, Kansas in 1940 and worked in Topeka, Kansas and Mobile, Alabama before moving to Battle Creek, Michigan in 1965. She retired from Michigan Bell in March 1981, and returned to Topeka in 1993.
Marcella taught herself to sew and that became a lifelong hobby of making clothes, doll clothes, stuffed animals, afghans and pillows; this talent was often shared as gifts to family and friends.
She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Telephone Pioneers of America, and Communication Workers of America.
Marcella married John E. Buchmeier on June 12, 1955 in Topeka, Kansas. He died September 20, 1991. Survivors include sisters, Carolyn Fitzgerald (James), Topeka, Mildred Luckan, Lawrence; brother, Dale Kratochvil (Delores), Greeley, Colorado; nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Evelyn Miller and Arlene Blanck.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, May 13, 2013 at Trinity Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. Marcella will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.
