Marcus Daniel Thompson, 37, of Lawrence, Kansas passed away July 17, 2014. He was born at Emporia, Kansas on March 15, 1977 to Samuel R. Thompson Jr. and Kathleen A. Theis Thompson. Marcus was raised in Topeka, Kansas and attended Topeka public schools. He graduated from Washburn University with a bachelor of fine arts degree.
Marcus spent thousands of hours in pursuit of his artistic craft, much of it indoors. He also was a gifted nature photographer, enjoying hunting, fishing and camping with friends and family. He had the hands of an angel, using them to paint like a Renaissance master, to sight a big deer with his hunting bow, or to rig a fishing line just right for the job at hand. Marcus provided his lucky family with lots of venison from Kansas' great woods and many fish fries when the Crappie were running in the area lakes. Shortly before his untimely passing, he went fishing 30 miles into the Gulf of Mexico. He was a man of great stature, but the fish he hooked that day nearly yanked him over the side into 200 feet of water. After a 15 minute fight, and despite the efforts of the ship's captain to maneuver the boat to Marc's advantage, the great fish drug the line under the stern and cut itself free.
Marcus is now free of his earthly bonds, and has one of the best fish stories of his tragically short life to tell in the great beyond to all who might pull up a chair. We rest assured he will find a large audience when his luminous smile lights up the heavens from one side of the Milky Way to the other.
Marcus is survived by his mother Kathleen Getto and step-father Paul R. Getto of Florida; brother Christopher Thompson ( Cynthia) of Colorado; sister Stacey Lawton of Topeka; niece Bryana Thompson and nephews, Demitri Thompson, Malachi Salus, Jasiah Thompson and Tavarus Thompson, all of Colorado; grandmother Pat Theis of Florida; aunt Araby Nichols of Minnesota; and an uncle Michael Theis of Topeka. He was preceded in death by his grandfather Charles A. Theis, Jr. and his father Samuel R. Thompson, Jr.
A memorial service will be held at Dove Cremation & Funeral Service on July 24, 2014 at 2:00PM with visitation following the service.
