Margaret E. Ballou

June 30, 1939 — February 7, 2021

Margaret Elyce Ballou, a good and faithful servant, was welcomed into the Kingdom of God on February 7th, 2021. She was born in Lincoln, KS June 30th, 1939, second daughter of Maxine (Shaffstall) and Russel Ballou. Her niece, Laura Ballou and favorite 'pup-dog' Emma "Emmie- Lou", were honored to care for their Auntie in their home, until she entered into eternal slumber. We rejoice in the promises of God in seeing her again in the house the Lord has prepared for us.

An advocate for education, Margaret graduated from Salina High School, then continued her studies at Marymount College in Salina and Southern California University earning a Masters degree in English. She taught high school English in Japan where she learned to speak Japanese fluently. Later, she continued her teaching career in Australia. Returning to the states, she completed her teaching career in the Goddard and Kansas City schools.

Margaret loved art- creating, painting, and ceramics, always supporting local Kansas City artists. She also had hobbies of gardening, traveling, shoe shopping, squirrel and bird watching, farmer's markets, genealogy, dolls, reading, and perusing antique and estate sales- eventually opening her own antique store. Margaret loved getting together with family for any occasion as she was always up for a good steak. Margaret was also an avid sports fan, cheering on the Chiefs and Royals. Margaret was a champion for women's rights and equality, the environment- belonging to the WWF and Audubon Society, and an advocate for animals supporting the ASPCA and Helping Hands Human Society. Margaret fondly recalled outings with her AARP group, to the theatre, and playing Mahjong with friends. Margaret, a dedicated servant, loved serving in the St Joseph Parish of Merriam.

Margaret will be missed dearly by all those who knew her. She was a devoted friend, Auntie to all, and mentor to students. She was loved by all who knew her and appreciated her kind heart, warm smile, and sense of humor.

Margaret was proceeded in death by her sister Loralle Ballou Kempton, brother in law Gene Kempton, nephew Curtis 'Curt' Kempton, and parents Maxine and Russel.

She leaves to mourn her loss, two brothers, William 'Bill' (Connie) Ballou of Arkansas, and Russel 'Steve' (Kathy) of Manhattan; nieces Laura Ballou of Topeka, Rebecca Hooper of South Carolina, Anne Kempton of South Carolina, Diane (Ryan) Bailey of Colorado Springs; Mauri (Mark) Decker of Topeka, nephews Christopher 'Chris' Kempton of South Carolina, Brett (Liz) Ballou of Manhattan; several great nieces, and a great nephew.

A private inurnment will take place at a later date in Salina.

Condolences may be sent to Steve Ballou 120 E Oak Valley Drive Manhattan, Kansas, 66502. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to their local churches or Furry Kids' Refuge, PO BOX 1442 Lee's Summit, MO 64063.

The family would like to recognize the extraordinary care given to Margaret: Drs. Rabe, Crane, Foos, Balanoff, and Rosenthal, with their entire care team of nurses, especially, Myra; Father Peter O'Donnell; Jennifer Gould; Leah Buthorne; Susie Romero; and Val and Marilyn from hospice. It is because of your care and dedication to helping the sick, Margaret lead a full and wonderful quality of life. There are no words for your unwavering blessings of love, encouragement, support, and kindness shown; Only, that we hold you dear to our hearts and lift you up in prayer.

"Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord." -Matthew 25:21
