Margaret Cecelia Cunningham (Verschelden), 64, of Topeka passed away suddenly April 11, 2023. Margaret was born on May 19, 1958 in Topeka, KS, daughter of Alphonse "Babe" Thomas Verschelden and Anna Marie Verschelden (Aubert). She graduated from St Mary's High School in 1976.
Margaret married Richard Cunningham in 1980. They treasured 25 years together raising their two children, Justin and Amanda. After Richard passed in 2004, she met David Turney. They would go on to enjoy each other's company for 18 years.
She began her career with the State of Kansas as a custodian in 2006. Her coworkers became like family to her. They are the reason she enjoyed her job for 17 years. She was set to retire June 12, 2023.
Margaret was the kind of person who was always down for an adventure. She was just happy to be there! However, unbeknownst to her travel companions, she was the one providing the adventure for them.
Margaret took so much pride in her gardens. She nurtured nature's creations into beautiful works of art. She was eager to share her bounty with anyone, and they were never hard to find.
Margaret will be remembered for her goofy sense of humor, contagious laughter, generous spirit, devotion to her family and friends, determination to keep the extended family connected, and incredible organization skills in order to keep her vast family informed of every birth, birthday, wedding, anniversary, and death like clockwork.
She is survived by her companion, David Turney, son Justin Cunningham, daughter Amanda Schoonover, grandson Joseph Schoonover, grandson Kason Schoonover, grandson Blake Schoonover, great-grandson Remington Schoonover, siblings Alice (Ray) Zeller, Joan Falley, Regina Verschelden, John (Linda) Verschelden, Rita (Paul) Etzel, Ann Fouts, Anita (Jerry) Culbertson, Frank Verschelden, Kenny (Pam) Verschelden, and Joseph Verschelden, and countless friends and family.
She was preceded in death by her first husband Richard Cunningham, father Alphonse Verschelden, mother Anna Verschelden, sister Mary Jo Lacock, sister Theresa Schleif, and son-in-law, Bryan Schoonover.
No word exists to describe how much she will be missed by anyone that has been lucky enough to have known her.
