Margaret Geraldine Howerton, 93, passed away early Friday morning, March 13, 2009 at a local care facility. She was born January 6, 1916, the first daughter to William Chester Howerton and Elizabeth K. Heisey Howerton. Her father died early in her life from injuries sustained in the Spanish-American War. Her mother later married John Taylor. She resided in Topeka most of her life and worked preparing trays in the kitchen at the old SBA Hospital and later as a home companion prior to retirement. She resided many years at Jackson Towers Apartments with her younger sister, and most recently at Mission Towers Apartments. She was fiercely proud of her independence, and enjoyed living alone with home-based service assistance until a fall last June required a move into a residential care facility. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, step-father, younger sister, Julia Estelle Howerton, and all known extended family members. She is survived by her guardian and friend, Carol DeGroff Sook, and friends from both Jackson and Mission Towers. Dove Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
