Margaret L. "Mamo" Woods, 88, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, May 23, 2010 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka. She was born on February 28, 1922 in Darlington, MO, the daughter of Elda H. and Golda V. Fry Butler.
She graduated from Topeka High School in 1940 and attended Clark's Business School. Margaret was employed as a cook for Washburn Rural High School from 1957-1968 and as a receptionist for Dr. Gene Nelson from 1969-1985 and for Dr. Mike Smith from 1985-1988. In 1947, she became an active member of Seabrook United Church of Christ where she held several offices, which later became First Congregational Church, served as a foster grandparent for KNI three years, was a member of the Moose Lodge where she served as Senior Office Regent, the V.F.W. Auxiliary and served on the board at Brewster Place and Foxridge Condominiums.
Margaret married Carl M. Woods on September 20, 1942 in Topeka. He preceded her in death on January 27, 1991. She was also preceded in death by her granddaughter, Leslie Richards, her great-granddaughter, Shelby Richards and step-granddaughter, Terri Smith.
Survivors include one daughter; Carol S. (Ken) Trimble of Topeka, Carl M. "Butch" Woods, Jr. of West Palm Beach, FL, four grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, two great-granddaughters, eleven step-great-grandchildren and nine step-great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday at First Congregational Church. Entombment will follow in Mount Hope Mausoleum. Margaret will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to First Congregational Church or Helping Hands Humane Society.
