Margaret "Elaine" Saffels

Margaret "Elaine" Saffels, 97, passed away on Wednesday, November 3, 2021.

She was born March 11, 1924, the third child of Edward and Margaret (Peterson) Nieman, Nortonville, Kansas. She graduated from Nortonville High School in 1942, and moved to Topeka to attend Strickler Business College.

She married Robert Morton Cowger in 1945. Elaine had a life time of service to her Lutheran church and community. She was a 50+ year member of the PEO Sisterhood, a Philanthropic Educational Organization. According to Elaine, her most important occupation was wife and mother. She was known for her hospitality and caring for others.

Elaine was preceded in death by Robert Morton Cowger (her first husband), Joseph Glen Deiter (her second husband) and Judge Dale Emerson Saffels. They enjoyed a 25 year marriage. Two sisters and a brother preceded her in death; Edward Nieman, Jr., Lois Llewellyn, and Naomi Nibbelink.

Survivors include a daughter, Lynda Carol Cowger Harris (Gerald), Colleyville, Texas and a son, Christopher Nieman Cowger (Carol), Topeka; three step-children, Suzanne Dale Gravitt, Virginia Beach, Virginia, Jim Bradford Saffels, Overland Park, Kansas, and Debbie Godowns, Leawood, Kansas; 11 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; her sister, Doris Coen, Hutchinson, Kansas and brother-in-law, Eustace Llewellyn, Lawrence; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Elaine bequeathed her body to the University of Kansas Medical Center Willed Body Program.

A Memorial service will be held in the Spring at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.
