Margaret B Shepherd, aged 90, died on March 23, 2016 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka, Kansas. Margaret was born December 13, 1925, in Crowder, Oklahoma, the daughter of Harmon Pulliam and Eva Jewel Eager.
On July 5, 1944, Margaret married Omer Lee Shepherd in Emporia, Kansas. Upon completion of his military service in the U.S. Army Airforce, they moved to Frankfort, Kansas. Following the birth of their daughter, Janet, the family moved to Wichita, Kansas where Omer Lee worked as a flight mechanic for Boeing Aircraft. Margaret raised Janet and worked in the home. Their second child, Lynn, was born in 1954. In 1960, the family returned to Frankfort, Kansas and purchased the Phillips 66 service station/grocery store and wrecker service. Margaret assisted in running the business until her husband's death following an accident in 1973. After her husband's death, Margaret moved to West Frankfort, Illinois, where she worked as a fry cook for 16 years at Hungry Jack's restaurant. Upon retirement, Margaret moved to Hoyt, Kansas. In 2013, Margaret moved to Redbud Plaza Assisted Living in Onaga, Kansas, where she resided prior to her death.
Margaret's passions were going to the casino, working jigsaw puzzles and watching baseball and basketball. She tracked multiple sports stats and was known for her amazing knowledge of professional and collegiate basketball and baseball teams and players. She was an avid KU basketball fan. Margaret enjoyed house-sitting for her daughter and taking care of the animals. She also enjoyed visiting with her fellow residents at the assisted living. Margaret loved visiting with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Margaret is survived by her daughter Janet Huffmier and son-in-law Bill Huffmier of Hoyt, Kansas, and her son Lynn Shepherd and daughter-in-law Cheryl Shepherd of Frankfort, Kansas. Margaret is also survived by three grandchildren, Brett Huffmier, Marlee Gilbert, and Molly Scriven; and five great-grandchildren, Paige and Caiden Gilbert, Shayla and Shyann Huffmier and Rachel Scriven.
A graveside service will be held for friends and family members at the Frankfort Cemetery on April 9th, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Margaret B. Shepherd memorial fund at the Denison State Bank, 210 KS-214, Hoyt, Kansas 66440.
