Mark E. Payne

September 16, 1927 — December 24, 2015

Mark E. Payne, 88, of Topeka, said "Hello" to Jesus, December 24, 2015 and is now absent from this world and a resident of Heaven! We miss him, but know he is in the home he loves!

Mark E. was born to John F. and Josephine Payne on September 16, 1927 in Delevan, Kansas. He was the youngest and sole survivor in a family with three brothers and one sister.

Mark's family resided in Hutchinson, Kansas where his father was a Methodist minister. Mark graduated from Hutchinson High School. Mark joined the U.S. Army during World War II and was a paratrooper in Japan. He remained in the Army as a reservist. Mark was drafted and served our country in Korea for a year. Mark and his wife, Winnie met, dated, fell in love and were married a week prior to his Korean deployment.

Upon his return home, he and Winnie moved to Manhattan, Kansas where Mark attended K-State. While at K-State, they had a son, Mark Whitney. Upon his graduation they added a baby girl, Michelle.

Mark drove a gasoline transport during his college years and fell in "like" with the business. Eventually, the family moved to Topeka where they opened a Skelly Service Station, and there, served the public for over 20 years.

Mark later sold automobiles for several dealerships in Topeka and when he "retired", he worked for Dillon's on Urish Road. He always needed to be a busy man, enjoying his work, at the same time loving and enjoying time with his family and friends. Mark was unable to attend church after his illness with cancer and he greatly missed going. Mark later developed Alzheimer's and spent the last four years of his life in the care of the Veterans Hospital here in Topeka.

Mark leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, Winnie; his son, Mark W. and wife, Kathleen; grandson, Mark G. and great-granddaughter, Tori R.; grandson, Taylor and wife, Daniel; his daughter, Michelle and her husband, Bruce; grandson, Miles and great-grandson, Sylas.

To know Mark E. was to love him and his positive way of life. He was always serving and helping others whenever he found the opportunity. He will be missed, but will always be remembered with love in the hearts of those who knew him.

We, the family, wish to extend our great appreciation for the wonderful care he received while at the V.A. Hospital the last 4 years. The staff are truly "angels" doing God's work here on earth! We wish to thank Dr. Marilyn Buenevar and P.A., Kevin Hawker, along with all of the staff. We felt like family during Mark's stay.

Per his wishes, Mark was cremated. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, January 7, 2016 at the Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center Building 4 in the Solarium.
