Martha Catherine (Fitch) Goodwin, 93, passed away peacefully after suffering the complications of Alzheimer's on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at Aldersgate Village in Topeka, KS.
Martha was born on September 27, 1922 in Springfield, MO to George E. and Bessie (Bodenhammer) Fitch and spent her depression era childhood surrounded by loving and supportive aunts and uncles in Springfield, Mountain Grove, and Strafford, Mo. She graduated from Strafford High School.
On December 13, 1941 she married Charles Milburn Goodwin in Springfield, MO., and to this union three daughters were born: Linda Charles Kay (Berends), Martha Catherine (Funk), and Shirley Sue (Evans). The family moved to Topeka, KS in 1957 and later, nearing retirement Martha and Charlie moved to Meriden, KS in 1966.
Martha retired from the Dept. of Revenue for the State of Kansas in 1984. In retirement, she and her husband traveled and camped throughout the Midwest. Martha took piano lessons and enjoyed playing her favorite hymns. She also took oil painting lessons with her favorite subject being old barns.
She was an active member of the Meriden Bible Church.
Martha was predeceased by her husband of 53 years in 1994, her parents and her devoted Aunts Myrtle and Maude Bodenhammer, her brothers; Donald, Gene, and George Fitch, her sister; Mary Utter and her cherished sons-in-law; Kenneth Berends and Ronald Funk.
Martha is survived by her daughters; Linda, Kathy and Shirley, her grandchildren; Michael, Milburn, Shelly Bess, Carrie Ruth, Mark, Catrina, Joe, Josh, Jon, and Lacy and 24 great-grandchildren.
Martha will be remembered by her loved ones for faithfulness to her Christian beliefs and for her perseverance and generosity in providing for her family.
The family would like to thank the staff at Aldersgate Village for the care and attention given to Mom during her long illness. She often said "they are so good to me here." Grace Hospice provided wonderful direction for her care and comfort in the last stage of her life. The family extends their gratefulness for their professional and excellent guidance.
The family will have a private memorial service to honor her life. Burial will be at the Meriden Cemetery.
