Mary C. Wortman, 91, Topeka, passed away Monday, November 9, 2015.
Mary was born October 24, 1924 in Muscotah, KS, the daughter of James E. and Helen (Sears) Clark. She graduated from Effingham High School and attended Kansas State Teachers College. She graduated from Washburn University with a Master's Degree in Education.
She taught Elementary Education in Topeka USD-501 for over 25 years, retiring in 1987.
She was a member of First Congregational Church, the Stormont-Vail Auxiliary where she was a past President, Topeka Panhellenic Council and the Topeka Retired Teachers Association. She continued to volunteer in the Topeka Public Schools and at Stormont-Vail for a number of years.
She was an avid reader, enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, baking, gardening, and spending summers at their second home in Green Mountain Falls, CO.
Mary married Ed Wortman on March 24, 1967. He died May 27, 2010. Survivors include children, Rhonda (Doug) Otto, Randy Harmon and Todd Richard Harmon, all of Topeka; step-son, John (Anna) Wortman, Punta Gorda, FL; grandchildren, Scott (Trisha) Otto, Brian (Lisa) Otto, Lisa (Steve) Chooncharoen, Darrin (April) Wortman, Shannon Wortman, Sean Wortman; and 6 great-grandchildren with two more expected in 2016. She was also preceded in death by 3 sisters and 2 brothers. She will be lovingly missed by her family.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 13, 2015 at First Congregational Church. Private family inurnment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday evening.
