Mary L. Whelan, 88, Topeka, passed away on Saturday, July 7, 2007 at Brewster Place.
Mary was born May 5, 1919 in Topeka, the daughter of Dr. H.A. and Helen (Poage) Alexander. She graduated from Topeka High School and Washburn University with a degree in History.
She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and active on the boards of the Junior League, Girl Scout Council, and Ingleside Home.
She was employed as a bookkeeper at Midwest Wholesale, a division of Whelan Lumber for many years.
She married Wayne Whelan on December 21, 1941 in Norfolk, Virginia. He died January 14, 2002. She is survived by her children; Janice Good and husband, Jim, Denver, Colorado and Ward Whelan, and wife, Debbie, Topeka; three grandsons, Mat Good, Jeff Whelan and Todd Whelan; a sister, Marge McElhenny, Topeka, and nieces Ann McElhenny and Sara McElhenny.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at Mount Hope Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel. Mary will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 37th & Wanamaker, after 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday and visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
