Matthew James Gehrt

Matthew "Matt" James Gehrt of Topeka, Kansas passed away from a ruptured aneurism on Sunday, August 30, 2020 at St. Francis hospital. He was 64 years old.
A native Topekan, Matt was born at Stormont Vail on February 15, 1956 to Andrew and Evelyn (Schulz) Gehrt. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1974 and attended Washburn University.
He was employed as a machinist at Allis-Chalmers and later worked at American Investors Life and Jostens as a pressman.
He was a former member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
He enjoyed genealogy, woodworking, coffee, fishing, gardening, cooking, listening to and sharing his love of music, albums and visits with his grandchildren. Matt also loved researching everything imaginable online.
Matt married Debra S. Jarvis on July 18, 1982 in Topeka at Ward Meade Park. His wife of 38 years survives. Other survivors include children, Jennifer Image, Topeka; Janiece Image, Ottawa, James (Crystal) Gehrt, Emporia; grandchildren, Jacque (Nathan), Shawn, Antonio, Dani, E.J. and Sagan; great-grandchildren, Kale, Ashlynn, Jackson and Wren; sisters, Beth (Dave) Wilhelm, Hardy, IA and Joanna (James) Bradshaw, Topeka; and many other nieces, nephews, family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
