Max Eldon Metzger, 88, of Topeka, passed away Monday, January 31, 2022.
He was born August 10, 1933 in Decatur, Illinois, the son of Russell Ward and Dimple May (Crook) Metzger. He was a graduate of Clifton Hill High School, Clifton Hill, Missouri.
Max grew up in Missouri and came to Topeka in 1954. He worked first for Sarber Nursery and then worked for Heifner Nursery. He eventually started Metzger Nursery in 1970. His son-in-law, Ollie Dial joined him in partnership in 1980. Max retired in 2003 and continued to work with Ann Palmer and his loyal customers until 2007. His grandson, Travis Dial continues the family business.
Max married Doris Jean Mason on June 18, 1955 in Clifton Hill, MO. She preceded him in death on December 22, 2021. Survivors include two sons, John Wesley (Amy) Metzger of Topeka and Max "Randy" (Sharri) Metzger of Harveyville, KS; his daughter-in-law, Catherine Metzger of North Carolina; 15 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Louise Smith of Ohio; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and his canine companion, Sir Henry, who was the last of many dogs who were special to him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Gail Dial on June 24, 2016; his son, Mason Chris Metzger on May 9, 2007; his son-in-law, Ollie Dial on September 6, 2021; his sister, Betty May Rader; and three brothers, Ivan, Pat and David Metzger.
Max loved spending time with family, coaching his children's little league baseball teams and attending his grandchildren's sporting events. He was a kind, patient, honest, fair, humble man who enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, being outdoors and working. One of his many quotes was "a man with a shovel in his hand will never get cold!"
Honoring his request cremation is planned. A private family celebration will be held at a later date. Dove Cremations and Funerals, Southwest Chapel is assisting the family.
