Maynard Gerald Cox

Maynard Gerald Cox, 96 of Topeka, passed away Thursday, July 4, 2013.

Maynard was born May 13, 1917 in a farm home in Anderson County, three miles north of Colony, Kansas. He was the only child of Asa Ivan and Bessie Avo (Barnes) Cox.

After his graduation from Colony High School he completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Commerce (no Business Administration) from Kansas State College of Agriculture and Applied Science (now Kansas State University) in 1939. He is a Lifetime member of the University Alumni Association, a member of the University President's Club, a charter member of the President's Land Grant Legacy Society and a member of the Calvin Club.

After two years of high school training, in 1942 Maynard began work in the Federal Government worked 36 years for a few different agencies, the last 20 years as a Division Manager at Department of Agriculture, Agriculture Stabilization Data Center, Kansas City, MO, from which he retired in 1978. While there he served a term as President of the Greater Kansas City Federal Accounting Association and a term as President of the Greater Kansas City Agriculture Department Employees Club.

He met his first wife, Thelma Lorraine Patterson in Princeton, KS where they bother were High School Teachers. They lived in Kansas City, MO; Houston, TX; Ft. Worth, TX; Wichita, KS and Topeka. The moved from their home to Aldersgate Village in 1990, an after 50 years of marriage, Thelma passed away in April 1993.

He met his second wife, Helen Golden Mettner, at Aldersgate Village and they were married in Mary of 1994. She passed away in March, 2007 on their 13th anniversary.

He was a member of Susanna Wesley United Methodist Church, Topeka; an honorary member of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association in which he served for more than 20 years as Treasurer of the Topeka Chapter. He served in several officer and committee capacities on the Village Assembly at Aldersgate Village where he resided.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife of 50 years, Thelma Lorraine Patterson Cox, and his second wife of 13 years, Helen Evelyn Mettner Cox. Survivors include a step-son, Randy (Kathleen) Mettner of Topeka; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two nieces, Marcia Rothmier of Topeka and Rebecca Eckert of Fort Collins, CO; and a nephew, James Eckert of Banner, WY.

The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m., Thursday, July 11, 2013 at the Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd, Topeka. Private entombment will be at Mount Hope Mausoleum, Topeka. A memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at Wesley Hall at Aldersgate Village, 7220 SW Asbury Dr., Topeka, KS 66614. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Fund at Aldersgate Village.
