Melba E. Horton, 91, of Topeka, died peacefully on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at her home. She was born April 15, 1926 in Bigelow, Kansas, the first of seven children born to Earl Oliver and Carrie Arbutus Jones.
After graduation from Frankfort High School in 1944, she moved to Topeka and worked for the Morell Meat Packing Plant and later for the Air Force Supply Depot and the Kansas Military District. After the birth of her daughter, she stayed at home until 1972, when she went back to work as a teachers aid for the University Child Development Center, retiring in 1987.
Melba was an accomplished seamstress and homemaker. She was a leader for her daughter's Camp Fire group. She also enjoyed traveling throughout the United States. She was a long-time member of University United Methodist Church and was actively involved with the Sarah Circle there.
Melba married James C. Anno in June, 1947. He preceded her in death in June, 1948. She later married John "Dale" Horton on February 25, 1950 in Topeka. He preceded her in death on January 9, 2013. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Robert Jones.
Survivors include one daughter, Debra (Doug) Glenn of Topeka, two grandchildren, Adam (Robbyn) Glenn and Carrie (Jonathan) Goodman, four great-grandchildren, Gavin and Avery Glenn and Colton and Jackson Goodman. Also surviving are her siblings, Lois Stallard of Topeka, Leona Nelson of Greeley, Colorado, Delbert Jones of Scott City, Kansas, Victor Jones of Waterville, Kansas and Ken Jones of Frankfort, Kansas and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at the University United Methodist Church where the family will receive friends one hour prior to service time. Graveside committal services will follow at 3:30 p.m. at the Antioch Cemetery, Marshall County, Kansas.
