Melvin E. "Sonny" Bartholomew, 73, of Topeka, passed away on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka. He was born July 17, 1944 in Topeka, the son of Laurel R. and Helen L. (Kuker) Bartholomew.
Melvin graduated from Topeka High School in 1962 and attended Washburn University. He was a Navy veteran during the Vietnam War. He owned and operated Bartholomew Builders. He was a member of Central Park Christian Church.
Melvin married Sherry F. Alfrey on June 22, 1969 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include two children, Jeffrey A. (Darlene) Bartholomew of Topeka and Kimberly K. (Doc) Pierce of Centerville, Missouri, ten grandchildren, Ashley Boyer, Josh Bartholomew, Kayla Mathis, Bobby Pierce II, Krystal Mathis, Cassidy Bartholomew, Ryan Bartholomew, Adam Limbacher, Austin Limbacher, Andrew Limbacher and five great-grandchildren, Lauren, Chayse, Brayden, Langston and Liam.
Melvin was preceded in death by one son, Eddie, one daughter, Jennifer and his siblings, Laurel R. Bartholomew, Jr., Donna Jean Hutton and Glenda Lee Trimmer.
Melvin was a loving husband, father, grandparent and a friend to all who knew him. He will be greatly missed by all of those who continue to love him.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 1, 2018 at Dove Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd. Cremation will follow the service and private inurnment will take place at a later date. Melvin will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 31, 2018 at the funeral home.
