Mel was born and raised in Wheeling, WV where he met his future wife Millie in high school. They graduated in 1941 and he immediately went to work for Burroughs Corporation. World War II began and they married while he attended Niagara University as part of the Army Specialized Training Program before going to Europe with the 104th Infantry Division Timberwolves. He fought in the Allied advance into Germany and in the Battle of the Bulge as a squad leader, receiving the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Combat Infantry Badge among other decorations.
At the war's end, he returned home, resumed working for Burroughs, and began a family. They lived in Pittsburgh, PA and raised their sons, then moved to Topeka, KS in 1964. He always valued education and completed his Bachelor's Degree at Washburn University in 1974, and Millie did, too, a couple of years later. When he retired in 1983, he taught piano for seniors, wrote a column for a computer magazine, and also published other freelance articles.
He was preceded in death last year by Millie, after seventy years of marriage.
He is survived by his two sons and their families. Terry and Kathy Falck live in Topeka and their son Tyler currently resides in Jinan, China with his fiancé Jessica Benner. Doug and Debbie Falck live in Edmond, OK and Mel's other grandson, Victor Falck, lives in Long Boat Key, FL with his wife Ellie and their boys, Mel's great-grandsons, Hayne and Drew.
Mel had been in Assisted Living at Rolling Hills for the past year and died at the Midland Care Hospice House. No public memorial service is planned; contributions may be made to the Falck Family Scholarship Fund at Washburn University.
