Merle Lee Hartner, age 93, passed away peacefully on Aug 28, finally at peace from the ravages of Alzheimer's Disease. Merle is survived by her daughter Connie ( Hal) DeHart, her sons Ralph and Steve ( Sharon) Hartner and her grandchildren Georgette, Stacia, Alicia , Sarah and Jennifer. Merle is also survived by great-grandchildren Matt, Cody, Taylor, Jacob, Jameson, Juliet, Lane and Kodi Jo, plus Frankie and Penelope; her great-greatgrandchildren; sisters Faye and Edna and her brother Wayne Cantwell.
Merle will join her brother Tom, sister Doody and her parents in a Heavenly reunion. Mom will also meet up with Lash, her beloved Yorkie who passed away before her.
Merle was a member of the Eastern Star and actively participated in her younger years. Merle was born in Rush Springs, Oklahoma and was one eighth Cherokee. Merle loved to play golf in the spring and summer and picked up black walnuts in the fall to make cookies and breads. Merle loved to crochet and oil paint and her family has many quilts and pieces of art work to remember her by.
Her children remember what a wonderful work ethic she passed on to them. Merle worked part time long after her retirement for KNI and the Topeka State Hospital. She was a hostess at Keck's Steakhouse and when she was married to Jack, a Santa Fe lobbyist, she loved to entertain. Merle was a great dancer and loved to go the Vinewood in the 60's and dance. Merle loved to dance around her living room to Lawrence Welk much to her daughter Connie's delight. Merle was also a traveler, joining the Elderhostel travel group and going to study the flora and fauna of Bermuda, the Hearst Castle, and the Winchester House in California. Merle survived cancer twice and in her 80's ran a 5k in KC with her daughter and granddaughter for Avon Running Breast cancer awareness.
Donations may be made to Helping Hands Humane Society. There will be a family gathering later on at Mt. Hope Cemetery when he ashes are interred into her mother's resting place under a large peaceful pine tree.
