Michael D. Barnett, 63, Topeka, passed away Sunday, March 17, 2013 at Midland Hospice House.
Michael was born November 19, 1949 in Beloit, the son of Joseph A. and Phyllis L. (Niles) Barnett. He graduated from Topeka West High School in 1967 and attended the University of Kansas and graduated from Washburn University in 1972.
He served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam era, and was honorably discharged as a 1st Lieutenant.
He was a Registered Geologist, at one time partnering with his father in Barnett, Stuart & Dow, and later worked as a Principal for GeoSource, retiring in February of this year.
He was a member of the Patriot Guard, American Legion Riders and Post 421, the Geological Society of America, and was a 7th Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and held Black Belts in multiple styles of Martial Arts.
Michael married his soul mate, Debbie Ellis on May 19, 2012 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include sons, Anthony (Katie) Barnett, Lawrence, P.J. Barnett, Overland Park; sister, Patty (Tom) Seitz, Nolensville, TN; former wife, Mary Laura Barnett; and step-children, Tyler Ludwick, Denver, CO, and Sabra Ludwick, Lawrence. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Susan Jo Barnett-Phillips.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
