Michael James "Sarge" McGinley, 55, of Topeka, passed away on Thursday, October 13, 2005 at St. Francis Health Center in Topeka. He was born April 7, 1950 in Mequoketa, Iowa, the son of Joseph Aloysious McGinley, and Helen Gilmore McGinley. He grew up near Quincy, Illinois and attended St. John's Catholic School in Quincy Illinois. Michael worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 13 years. He served in the United States Military for more than 22 years before retiring in 1988. During that period, he served in Vietnam protecting American freedom. Michael and Donna Jean renewed their wedding vows on November 27, 1992 at the First Baptist Church in Chester, Nebraska. Survivors include his wife Jean of the home; a son, Christopher McGinley and wife Kelli, a daughter, Heather Holzhauser, and husband Joey, Overland Park. Two sisters, Maryanne McMullen, Eskridge, Kathy Lentz, Harker Heights, Texas; Two brothers, Danny "Butch" and wife Brenda McGinley, Timothy and wife Vickie McGinley, both of Chester, Nebraska; a grandson Korbyn and a granddaughter, Kyndra. Michael is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel. Burial will follow at Ft. Riley Cemetery, where military honors will be presented by a burial detail from Ft. Riley, Kansas. Michael will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Sunday, at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Sunday evening.
