Michael James "Mike" Schecher

October 25, 1964 — June 5, 2024

Michael James Schecher, 59, left our world on Wednesday, June 5, 2024 while enjoying a ride on his Harley. Mike was born October 25, 1964 in Horton, Kansas, the son of Charles “Chuck” Schecher and Bernetta Clark Schecher.

Mike is survived by his father, Chuck Schecher, brother, Jerry, sister, Laura / brother-in-law, Clay Cowart, niece, Nichole / Keith Henry, nephews, Jacob Cowart and Naaman Schecher; great-nephews, Kaden and Jaxon Henry.

Mike was preceded in death by his son, Keaton Blair Schecher; great-nephew, Jeffrey Hedrick and mother, Bernetta Schecher.

Mike graduated from Horton High School in 1983. He continued his education obtaining multiple certifications in the telecommunication industry. Mike dedicated the majority of his professional career with Phoenix Tower, Horton, Kansas as a highly skilled tower technician. Mike led crews installing cellular systems and building towers across Kansas as well as performing maintenance on tower systems throughout the United States. Climbing from 200 - 1500 feet carrying 40+ lbs and then working on towers year-round in all weather conditions is dedication. His decades of dedication to the industry allow us to enjoy the benefits of our mobile devices. After September 11, 2001, Mike was tower lead on a Department of Defense project in Hawaii that increased our security capabilities, protecting the country. After retiring from the tower industry, Mike was responsible for facility maintenance for NEKCAP, Hiawatha, KS, providing maintenance to the outreach facilities in NE Kansas. For the past several years Mike was employed at Arnie’s Boat Sales and Service, Lawrence, KS as a marine technician. Mike’s natural mechanical skills were an asset wherever he was employed and appreciated by all who knew him.

Mike was an accomplished outdoorsman and enjoyed passing down generations of knowledge to his beloved son Keaton. Mike held a deep sense of appreciation for nature and the fish and wildlife he loved so much. They both shared that love of the outdoors and a love of motorcycles. They could often bee seen riding the country together enjoying life and each other. Those who knew and loved Mike knew he was a quiet, kind man with an adventurous spirit and quick sense of humor. He was a loyal father, son, brother, uncle and friend, he will be deeply missed. He leaves behind his four-legged family Lucy and Ricky who he rescued from the Atchison Humane Society and Bert, a street cat he saved and nurtured back to life more than once.

A private family gathering to celebrate Mike’s life will be held at a later date.

If you knew and loved Mike and want to honor his memory we ask that you visit the Atchison Humane Society, 100 N 21st Street, Atchison, KS 66002 or the Brown County Humane Society, 2393 Mallard Road, Hiawatha, KS 66434 and adopt if you can or make a donation in Mike’s name.
