Mildred Elizabeth "Milly" Mitchell, 86, of Topeka, passed away Friday, August
19, 2011 at Midland Hospice House, Topeka.
She was born February 3, 1925 in Pearl, IL, the daughter of Guy "Joe" and Florence "Pearl" (Cloninger) Crowder.
She was employed by Western Cartridge Company, Alton, IL during WW II. She was also employed as waitress for her brother, Carl's café and a garment factory in
Louisiana, MO. She also worked on the family farm in Pike County, IL and for the Pearl Button Factory in Pearl, IL.
She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Louisiana, MO.
Mildred married Wilson E. "Bill" Mitchell on December 3, 1949 in Louisiana, MO. He preceded her in death on October 7, 1999. Survivors include children, Michael Edward (Vicky) Mitchell, Billy Carl Mitchell, and Tracey Mitchell, all of Topeka; 2 step grandchildren, Ryan Johnson, Topeka and Keith (Melissa)Johnson, Springfield, MO; 6 step-great-grandchildren, Caden and Kylee Johnson, Noah, Isaac, Eli and Katherine Johnson; several nieces and nephews, including nieces, Debra Ward, Hannibal, MO and Carla Starman, Rockport, IL.
She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, Walter and Joe Crowder and Joy Crook; 2 infant siblings, Harry and Hallie Crowder; 2 half-siblings, Glen and Carl Crowder.
Milly was an avid reader. She enjoyed quilting, embroidery, crocheting, traveling and watching Turner Classic Movies. She closely followed political and religious current events.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Monday, August 22, 2011at the Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota, Topeka. Interment will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, Topeka. Mrs. Mitchell will lie in state after 2 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 4-5 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Eventide Convalescent Center, 2015 SE 10th Ave, Topeka, KS 66607.
