Mildred Lucille Tilton, 100, died April 4, 2012 at Midland Hospice. She was born Sept. 29, 1911 in Soldier, KS, the daughter of James and Bessie Johnson. She retained a bright, clear mind and interesting personality until the very end.
Mildred married Gerald "Morris" Tilton May 26, 1929 in Soldier, KS. He preceded her in death March 6, 1965. Also preceding her in death were son, Robert Tilton in Oct. 2003; sister, Edna and brothers, Otis and Cecil.
She is survived by sons, Ray G. (Georganna), Fred O. (Alice), James K. (Connie), and daughter-in-law Carol Tilton, all of Topeka. Also surviving her are13 grandchildren, Robert Tilton, Steven Tilton, Patricia Farrell, Pamella Tidwell, Penny Tilton, Paulla Tilton, Rebecca Nesmith, Janis Branch, Jeff Tilton, Jody Cooper, Joe Tilton, Kriss Mann, Jim Tilton; 19 great-grandchildren, Janelle, Jamie, Marlene, Jennifer, Daniel, Jason, Christopher, John, Garry, Ted, Cory, Sam, Ray-Vun, Sarah, Eric, Emily, Michael, Spencer, Tristen; great-great grandchildren, Braden, Maia, Cheyenne and Edward. She was also known as "Grandma" to many other children she cared for and loved throughout her life.
Mrs. Tilton was loving, compassionate and truly admired by those who were fortunate to have known her.
Her work history included employment at Tilton's Markets, Forbes Supply Depot, Palace Clothing and Jostens Yearbook. Her hobbies & activities included quilting, gardening, and making stuffed animals for her grandchildren, HDU, and Eastern Star. She was a proud two time survivor of cancer in the 1960's, and she was instrumental in starting the lunch program at Wanamaker Elementary School.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 7th at Mt. Hope Cemetery, 4700 SW 17th Street in Topeka. A visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, April 6th at Dove Cremation & Funeral Service, 4020 SW 6th Street in Topeka.
