Miriam G. Lira

Miriam Grace Lira, 81, Topeka, died Saturday, March 12, 2005 at her home.
She was born August 16, 1923 in Hartford, Wisconsin, the daughter of Rev. Alden Christian and Grace Heckman Baughman. She graduated from Shorewood High School in Shorewood, WI in 1941, and received a BA from Carthage College, Carthage, IL in 1945. She received a MA from the University of Illinois in 1946 and did post-graduate work at the University of Minnesota School of Social Work.
She was employed by the Kansas Department of Social Welfare and was assigned to the children's receiving home at Atchison. She later joined the staff of the Kansas Boys Industrial School (now Youth Center at Topeka), where she helped develop youth rehabilitation programs. She married Donald A. Lira on Oct. 11, 1953. They made their home in Topeka, and Miriam devoted herself to the care of her family.
Miriam was a "Heritage Member" of First Lutheran Church, having joined more than 50 years ago. She taught Sunday School for many years and was active in the Lutheran Church Woman's organization. She spent many hours devoted to helping others. She enjoyed her flower gardens, especially beautiful varieties of iris. Genealogical research was a hobby she pursued.
Miriam is survived by her husband, Donald A. Lira, Topeka; her sister, Lovina J. Hermanek, Decatur, IL; her brother, Rev. Paul J. Baughman, Tacoma, WA; her three children, John C. Lira, Broken Arrow, OK, Carl T. Lira, East Lansing, MI, Ruth A. Quinn, Yellowstone National Park, WY, and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm Friday at First Lutheran Church. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Fontanelle, NE. The family will receive friends from noon until service time at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to First Lutheran Church library, 1234 SW Fairlawn, 66604, or to a favorite charitable organization.
