Newt Harris

January 15, 1935 — January 18, 2017

Newt Harris, 82, of Topeka, passed away on Wednesday, January 18, 2017. He was born January 15, 1935 in Greenville, Mississippi, the son of John and Fannie Mae (Jeffries) Harris, Sr.

He was a Marine Corps Veteran during the Korean War.

Newt was employed by the Santa Fe Hospital. He was a member of True Vine Missionary Baptist Church.

Newt loved all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also had a special bond with Pernell A. Mack, Sr. as well as a special cousin he loved dearly, Dorothy Holcomb whom he would refer to as "Dot".

Survivors include children, Tina Johnson, Felicia (Ray) Hackney, Dawn (Earl) Dixon, Pam (David) Robinson, Julia Pleasant, Derrick (Lynell) Pleasant, 17 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, his sister, Lillie King and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Newt was preceded in death by his parents, 2 granddaughters, Dawnisha Lowery, Tourquoise Abercrombie and his 12 siblings, two twins, Major, Richard, Sr., John Jr., Lester, Edward, Ida White, Cora Carr, Venus Roberts and Willie May.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel. Private inurnment will take place at a later date.
