Om P. Agrawal from Khurja, India, passed away at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas, on Tuesday, April 26, 2016.
Fulfilling his mother's last wish, Om was the first in his family to go to college attending Indian School of Mines. He then worked as a mining engineer throughout Eastern India for several years. He and his family immigrated to the US in 1976. The family prospered for 10 years in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. From there, his entrepreneurial spirit took him to St. Louis, Missouri, to start his own business. In his next transition he earned his Master of Science degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Missouri - Rolla at the age of 53. He ultimately came to Topeka to join the Kansas Department of Health and Environment where he worked for 15 years until his retirement in 2009.
Om clearly recognized the importance of education and lifelong learning, and through his own willingness to struggle and persevere was able to set an example that made the American dream possible for his family.
Om had a very independent spirit and enjoyed building and fixing. He was the one to turn to when anything needed fixing around the house. He was also a devoted lifelong gardener - growing flowers, fruit trees, and vegetables, at home and in community gardens.
Though his health deteriorated due in part to Parkinson's Disease, Om maintained his independence and active lifestyle by going for long walks and to the gym almost daily to his final days.
Om is survived by Asha, his wife of 50 years, and his three sons: Vipul (sons Rama, Ravi), Vivek (wife Cheryl), and Vinay (wife Abha, sons Nikhil, Sidharth).
A private family cremation service will be held on Friday, April 29. Visitation services will be held at the family home on Saturday, April 30.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made for Parkinson's research to reputable charities such as: The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
