Paul D. Tompkins, 89, Topeka, passed away Monday, August 12, 2013 at McCrite Plaza.
Paul was born September 22, 1923 in Melvern, the son of Paul and Grace (Allan) Tompkins. He graduated from Melvern High School in 1941 and attended Washburn University. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
During his professional career, he was active in local, state and national Independent Insurance associations, serving as President of the Topeka association; President of the Kansas State association, and as state national director to the national association. He also was named Insurance Man of the Year by both the local and state associations several times. He served as Chairman, Board of Directors for Sargent-Wanamaker Insurance at the time of his retirement. After his retirement, he continued to work for the state association, primarily as a membership recruiter, and also in connection with education programs.
He was a member of A.F. & A.M. Lodge#22 in Melvern and active in various insurance organizations. He served as President of the Board of the United Methodist Home during the building of Aldersgate Village. Kansas Governor Joan Finney appointed him to serve a three-year term as a member of the Public Employees Relations Board, beginning in 1994.
He was a great fan of KU Athletics.
Paul married Daphne Sedgwick on November 14, 1942 in Topeka. They recently celebrated 70 years of marriage. She survives. Other survivors include their children, Jerry Tompkins, Topeka, Sandra (Steve) Krantz, Lenexa; grandchildren, Kimberly (Heather Jones) Reynolds, Patrick Tompkins, Aaron (Atalie) Tompkins, Dianne (Corey) Brown; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Lorna Eskridge and Veva Young.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road. Inurnment services will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the Melvern Cemetery at Melvern.
