Penny Jean Barrows, 63 Topeka, passed away November1, 2013 at Rolling Hills Care Center.
Penny was born February 4, 1950 in Burns, OR, the daughter of Trolls Nielson and Phyllis Carrington, and later adopted by Dana and Bertha Barrows.
She graduated from Topeka High School in 1968 and Washburn University in 1989 with honors with a Bachelor's degree in Education. While in college she worked for organizations such as the Girls Club of Topeka, the Salvation Army of Topeka; and later taught at Memorial hospital , Topeka USD-501 school district, and also Security Benefit Academy until early retirement due to being disabled.
She loved working with children, had a love for music and very much embraced cultural diversity; always willing to help others in time if need including taking in friends when there was no other place to go.
She opened her home during her son's high school education to a foreign exchange student (Fabio) for 6 years. She sacrificed so that others could have while running her household with only one income. Her pride and joy was her son and they were inseparable. She was a very loving and understanding person, and if you ever got a chance to meet her you would feel the same.
Survivors include her son, Aaron (Tracey) Barrows, Topeka, daughter, Christy (Richard Schmalzried) Lovick, Allen, TX; grandchildren, Marley, Megan, Matthew; and twin brother, Leonard Barrows. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 8, 2013 at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road. Penny will lie in state at the funeral home after 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 7, 2013 and visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
