Phaleta L. Sergeant, 80, of Topeka, passed away on Sunday, October 16, 2016 at a Lawrence care facility. She was born September 2, 1936 in Davenport, IA, the daughter of Harold and Greeta (Gatchell) Hainline.
Phaleta graduated from Bettendorf High School in Bettendorf, IA in 1954 and earned a BA in Speech from the University of Iowa in 1958. She was employed as a substitute teacher by the school district in Bettendorf and as an Administrative Assistant in the business admitting office at St. Luke's Hospital in Davenport, IA.
Phaleta resided in Bettendorf for most of her life until moving to Topeka in 1998 where she lived until moving to Lawrence this year. She volunteered for Stormont Vail Hospital and enjoyed singing in church choirs. She was a member of the National Federation of Women's Clubs, O.E.S., the Early American Pattern Glass Society and the Prairie Land Depression Era Glass Club.
Phaleta married Jerry Sergeant on September 1, 1956 in Bettendorf, IA. He preceded her in death on September 18, 2003. Survivors include three children, Steven (Jean) Sergeant of San Jose, CA, Paul (Fiancé Stefani Siebeneck Wilde) Sergeant of Lee's Summit, MO, Bruce (Julie) Sergeant of Lecompton, KS, grandchildren, Lisa Frank, Katie Sergeant, Haley Sergeant and Erin Sergeant, two great-granddaughters and her sister-in-law, Nancy (John) Hemingway of Clinton, IA.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 19, 2016 at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel. Inurnment will follow in Lynn Creek Cemetery southeast of Topeka.
