Phyllis Jean Worthington

December 21, 1930 — October 31, 2020

Phyllis Worthington, 89, of Tecumseh, passed away Saturday, October 31, 2020.

She was born Phyllis Jean Woodward on December 21, 1930, in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Merton and Wilma (Zirkle) Woodward.

Phyllis was a graduate of Berryton High School and a member of the Shawnee Heights United Methodist Church, of Tecumseh.

Phyllis married Eugene "Gene" Worthington on June 3, 1956 in Topeka. He preceded her in death on November 25, 2015. Phyllis was also preceded in death by her brothers Galen, Wayne, and Eldon. Survivors include her children, Mike (Debbie) Worthington of Tecumseh, Cathy (Don) Shrewsbury of Tecumseh and Patti Swenson of Overland Park; five grandchildren, Trevor, Jessica, Jaime, Casey and Paige; four great-grandchildren, Brandt, Rogan, Kashtyn, and Beckett; and many nieces and nephews.

Phyllis did many things throughout her life. She showed cattle in 4-H when she was younger, worked at Goodyear, ran the concession at Watson Grange for fastpitch softball games, and drove a school bus for 18 years. Yes, she loved driving the bus and being around all the kids.

Along with all the activities of being a mom, she also assisted her husband Gene in all of his endeavors. This included the family farm, selling Dekalb seed, Laird Noller Ford duties, vending machine routes, and so much more.

Phyllis enjoyed watching baseball (especially her Royals) on TV, crossword puzzles, working her jigsaw puzzles and fixing big family dinners. She loved spending time with her family and watching her 3 children grow and raising their families. Phyllis always said she was a country girl and loved riding in her golf cart around the fields to the pond in back of her house. Whenever the weather was good you could count on seeing her sitting on her deck where she could see the country view, the neighbor's horses, and her beloved rose bushes.

Phyllis was a special lady with a positive, cheerful disposition and a smile that could brighten anyone's day. She will be greatly missed.

A graveside service for the family will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shawnee Heights United Methodist Church, 6020 S. E. 44th St., Tecumseh, KS 66542.
