Rachel Dyer, 76, of Topeka, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, October 24, 2021. She was born November 25, 1944 in Pattison, Mississippi, the daughter of James Leatherberry and Rebecca Trunell. She was raised by Velma Shorter whom she referred to as her mother also.

Rachel was employed by the University of Kansas for many years and later went to work for Washburn University before retiring in 2003. She was a member and Mother of True Light Church Ministries. Rachel had a very strong faith in the Lord. She was very devoted to her family and cared for her grandchildren during their upbringing as well as other children.

Rachel married James Dyer on December 31, 1967 in Hollandale, Mississippi. He survives. Other survivors include children, Brenda L. Dyer of Topeka, Ronald "Ronnie" E. Dyer of Topeka, six grandchildren, Jenae, Kiesheaira, Marcus, Roneisha, Kiana and Zy'Keiyah, eight great-grandchildren, Laniyah, Diamond, Immanuel, Marcio, Nova, Octavion, Amiyah and Kashton and twelve siblings, Ellie Trunell, David Trunell, Michael Trunell, Mason Trunell, Jeff (Sally) Gibson all of Fayette, Mississippi, UL (Juanita) Gibson of Terry, Mississippi, Willie (Loretta) Gibson of Jackson, Mississippi, Grover Trunell of Bloomington, Illinois, Elbert Trunell of Kitzinger, Germany, Elaine (Willie) Powers and Overlee (Andrew) Bell both of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Carrie Smith of Topeka and a host of other relatives and close friends.

Rachel was preceded in death by her parents, one son, James Earl Dyer, Jr. on August 10, 2007 and her three siblings, Easter Leatherberry-Thomas, Burnell "Preacher" Bailey and James "Book" Smith.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 30, 2021 at Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Rachel will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Friday, October 29, 2021 at Dove Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota Ave.
