Raymond L. Westerfield

Raymond Lawrence "Larry" Westerfield, 85, Overbrook, formerly of Tecumseh, passed away on Friday, May 21, 2010 at the Colmery-O'Neil V.A. Hospital in Topeka.

Larry was born February 7, 1925 in Mount Leonard, MO, the son of Raymond Muriel and Susie (Wood) Westerfield. He grew up in Lee's Summit, MO.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving a Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal while serving in the China Burma India Theater of Operations. He was only recently presented these medals with the assistance of Senator Brownback.

He was an inventor, personal pilot and engineer at Seymour Foods; owned and operated the Phillips 66 station at 6th & Gage and Larry's Garage in Highland Park, retiring in the early 90's.

He was a member of A.A. for 42 years. He was past Commander and lifetime member of American Legion Post #1 in Topeka and a member of the 40/8. He had several hobbies including playing the guitar. He had a passion for flying his own airplanes. He became an avid horseman in the equine field where he trained and showed his beloved Arabian horses. He was also a 4-H leader for the Shawnee Co 4-H Horse Club.

Larry married Gertrude Faye "Gert" Hess on November 25, 1961 in Miami, OK. She passed June 1, 2009. Survivors include daughters, Lori Nottestad, Carbondale, Lari (Mark) Mertel, Topeka; step-sons, Ronald (Peggy) Harding, Granbury, TX, Stephen (Chris) Harding, Silver Lake; 18 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren; and sisters, Barbara Lay, Mary Robinson, both of Topeka, and Mildred Maxon, Muskogee, OK. He was also preceded in death by a son, Ronnie Westerfield; brothers, James Westerfield, Sr. and John Bennett, Jr; and sisters, Nancy Cude and Judy Dodder.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road. Burial will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. Larry will lie in state at the funeral home after 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday and visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Colmery-O'Neil Veterans Administration Hospital, Community Living, 2200 SW Gage, Topeka, Kansas 66622.
