Rebecca Ann "Betty" Wakes Herrington, 82, Topeka, passed away Friday, March 14, 2014.
She was born December 11, 1931, in Lake Village, Arkansas, the daughter of Luelling and Argenta (Coleman) Wakes. After graduating from Topeka High School, she attended the public school practical nursing where she became a graduate practical nurse. She was in the nursing field for 49 years, retiring from Brewster Place in 1997.
Ms. Herrington was a member of the True Vine Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the mother board until she became ill.
Survivors include her children, Billy Wayne Coleman (Dawn), Locust Grove, GA; Constance Argenta Davis (Raymond), Topeka; Minnie Lora Simms, Topeka; Anthony W. Griffin, Berryton and La'Tondra M. Herrington, Topeka; her brother, Lueling "Nick" Wakes Jr., Topeka; sister, Katherine M. Wakes-Artis, Topeka; 10 grandchildren, Raymond L. Davis, Jr. (Rita), Shanta R. Wright, Fabian Griffin, La'Keysha R. Wilson (Kyle), Le'Osha L. Robinson, Dineasha Griffin, Valekka R. Davis, Trent O. Robinson, Shakell D. Herrington and Shaki D. Phillips, 11 great-grandchildren, Braxton J. Fuller-Davis, Nikita L. Davis, Jalen A. Wilson, Genesis Davis, Jevhyn A. Wilson, Ceondre J. Anderson, Jamon A. Wilson, Vasiah Y.D. Knight, Tevon D. Stokes, Jr, Ricky D. Spivey, Jr. and baby Herrington, two sisters-in-law, Leola Wakes and Glendora Wakes, her aunt, Ernestine Coleman and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her son, Otho Lueling Simms, daughter, Rufina Denise Simms, two brothers, Reverend Melvin Clinton Wakes and Cleveland Clifton Wakes, and one great-grandchild, McCarrie Davis.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 21, 2014 at the True Vine Missionary Baptist Church, 307 SE Tefft, Topeka. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. A wake will be held on Thursday, March 20 at the Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
