Rev. Homer Martin, 82, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, September 10, 2011.
Born September 1, 1929 in Ruston, Louisiana to Norman and Helen (Watson) Martin, having 6 siblings: Annie Mae Burton, Adele Perkins, Maureen McDuffie, Martha Ann Gill, James Martin and Norma Lee Brisco and one grand child, Adrian Martin all have preceded him in death.
Rev. Martin's greatest joy was being the Superintendent of Sunday School for the Mt Carmel Missionary Baptist Church for over 30 years as well as an associate pastor.
He was also a veteran of the Korean War. Over the years he worked in several positions- VA Hospital, construction, and he drove the school bus for Durham services.
He loved people and telling stories. He never met a "stranger". He enjoyed his regular gathering with his friends at the Downtown McDonalds.
He is survived by his companion Annie Harmon and a daughter Angie Jones of Atlanta, GA. He was married to JoAnn Day and they were blessed with Brenda J. (Stanley) Redmon, Debra K. (Rennard) Sabb, Gale E. (Bivia) Martin, Carla Y. (Steven) Crowder, Lavirtes J. Martin, Dorian A. (Abby) Martin, all of Topeka; 21 grand children, 45 great-grandchildren, 1 great great-grandchild. He will be missed by a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Friday, September 16, 2011 at the Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, 610 SE Lime St., Topeka. Interment will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, Topeka. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m., Friday until the service hour at the church.
