Richard Higgs

Richard "Dale" Higgs, 79, Topeka, passed away on Thursday, February 24, 2011, at Aldersgate Village.

Dale was born July 12, 1931, in Kansas City, MO, the son of Raymond E. and Wilhemina A. (Bleier) Higgs. He graduated from Topeka High School where, during his senior year, he was a State Medalist in Golf. He attended Washburn University and was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War, where he was a paratrooper and an instructor in the Rangers Unit.

He worked at Nightingales Clothing Store, Goodyear, and was co-owner of Topeka Inventory Service. He also worked for Midwest Management, Speaker and Associates, where he managed FmHA rural rental property. He received numerous awards for his service and commitment. He finished his career working for Cellular One, as Real Estate Manager.

He was a member of First Baptist Church for over fifty years where he served as a Trustee, Deacon, and enjoyed being a greeter most of all. He was active as a leader with Boy Scout Troop #4.
Dale was married to Pamela M. Churchill for thirty-five years and later married Sharon Bennett and divorced, they survive. Other survivors include a son, Richard "Rick" Higgs, Jr. and wife, Michelle, grandchildren, Jennilee and Holly Higgs, Topeka; a daughter, Robyn Hamilton and husband, Gary, grandchildren, Cory and Emily Hamilton, Overland Park; and a sister, Mary Ella Tenpenny. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ken Higgs and a sister, Wilma Gilmore.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. Dale will lie in state after 2:00 p.m., Monday, February 28, 2011, at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
