Richard L. Bowers

October 22, 1955 — May 10, 2016

Richard L. "Radio Rich" Bowers, 60, of Topeka, passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2016. He was born October 22, 1955, in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Jack and Nancy (Coon) Bowers. He grew up in Webster Groves, Missouri, and graduated from Webster Groves High School. He attended Central Missouri State College and graduated from the Columbia School of Broadcasting.

"Radio Rich's" first radio job was in Rensselaer, Indiana, where he did everything from spin records to clean the bathroom. In the early 90's he accepted an on air position at WIBW-FM in Topeka, Kansas. In 1992 he partnered with Louann Fulmer and they became the most popular morning team working together for more than a decade. During that time, the Kansas Association of Broadcasters (KAB) recognized Rich as the best radio personality in 2001 and again in 2002. He was also selected by fans as the best radio personality in Topeka. Rich was hard working and committed to his listeners. It was his passion to keep them entertained and to stir the pot now and then.

Rich served his community by championing such organizations as TARC, St. Jude Hospital and the Children's Miracle Network. Rich was also a supporter of the Helping Hands Humane Society, adopting two English Bulldogs from the organization.

Above all else Rich celebrated his family, close friends, a trout stream, and a Cuban cigar. He was a loving father, a loyal friend, and a devoted and selfless husband.

Rich married Shirla on December 18, 1999 in Topeka, Kansas. She survives of the home. He is also survived by a son, Nick Bowers; father-in-law, Hugh (Sharon) Hannagan; sister-in-law, Erin (Darrell) Rush; brother-in-law, Shawn (Kathy) Hannagan; niece, Hannah Rush; nephews, Conner and Mike Rush; and his great-nephew, Jayson Rush. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Nancy (Coon) Bowers; and his mother-in-law, Mai Hannagan.

A Celebration of Life for family and friends will be arranged and held in the future. Memorial contributions may be made to TARC, 2701 SW Randolph, Topeka, Kansas 66611 or Helping Hands Humane Shelter, 5720 SW 21st Street, Topeka, Kansas 66604.
