Richard L. "Rick" Brown, 62, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, May 28, 2016 at Stormont-Vail Healthcare in Topeka. He was born November 27, 1953 in Topeka to Clarence L. and Martha J. (Halseth) Brown.
Rick thrived on hard physical labor and made it look easy.
He worked for the Roy V. Uhl Co. doing mud jacking and other foundation work for over 20 years.
Rick joined the Kansas Building Trades Local Laborers Union #1290. He did heavy highway construction. He worked on the turnpike between Topeka and Lawrence on the roads, toll booths and stayed late doing concrete sawing on the high walls between the east and west lanes.
He spent many hours on the reconstruction projects on Huntoon and 6th Streets, even over 24 hours straight a few times. Think of him when you are driving on those smooth roads now.
Rick worked for more than one company on the State Capitol inside and then spent 4 years with Mark I. He ran the lull, lifting the huge replacement stones into place through all the scaffolding for the stone masons. He also worked at the new Mars plant, built here in Topeka.
Rick liked cabinetry and refinishing wood furniture. He had the talent to make intricate wood braiding designs for office and library cabinet doors.
Rick's most enjoyable quiet moments were spent over the years with his different pets. Animals radiated to him. He had special rapport with "Hans", his mother's horse.
Rick was married to Kathy for 34 years as of April 23, 2016 and was a good provider. He is survived by his wife, Kathy; sisters, Christina, Roxanne and Rebecca; brother, Michael; mother, Martha and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Clarence; older brother, Olen "Butch" and first cousin, Michael Halseth.
Rick deeply cared for his extended family of siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and more. He was always very direct with people which gave him a rough exterior but that protected his heart of gold.
Rick hunted, skied and enjoyed fishing and boating. He was a NASCAR fan-atic. He fixed vehicles and roofed the house, painted it, re-plumbed it and more.
Rick was cremated. Per his wishes, no services will be held.
He was an organ donor and will be helping many people. If you wish to make a donation to Helping Hands Humane Society or the CAT Association in his name that is all he would want.
