Richard (Mike) Michael died Wednesday morning, October 8, 2014, at Midland Care Hospice House in Topeka. Mike was 73. He had cancer.
Mike was born June 21, 1941 in Topeka to O. E. Michael and Ruth (Finley) Michael. He was a 1959 graduate of Topeka High School and worked for the Federal Aviation Administration for 13 years as an Air Traffic Controller. Mike worked in several locations for the FAA, including Guam, Cut Bank, MT, and Salinas, CA. He became an instructor at the Oklahoma Aviation Flight School, Wiley Post Airport in Oklahoma City. He later worked for U.S. Supply/Ferguson Enterprises and retired as branch manager of Ferguson's Topeka office in 1995.
He married Janie Kay Jennings in 1960. They later divorced. He married Sally (Jones) Estes in December of 1972. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Sally Michael (2011) and his son Dean Jennings Michael (2008).
He is survived by daughters, Shelli (Mark) Mercer of Ozawkie, Kari (Gale) Estes-Myers of Meriden; son, Tod Estes of Pueblo, CO; grandchildren, Jordan and Madison Mercer, Robby and Jamie Michael, Amber, Jasmine and Cody Myers; and a sister, Barbara (Merwin) Kirkwood.
Mike knew no strangers and always enjoyed listening to everyone's life adventures as well as sharing his own, of which he had many. He always had a smile, even through tough times. He was an avid KC Royals fan. He also loved his very fat cat, Teddy.
The family would like to thank all who opened their hearts to him, with Scrabble, conversation and companionship over the recent times.
A celebration of life will be held at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 13, 2014. Donations can be made to Midland Care, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606.
