Richard Allen Moellenberndt, 71, passed away Saturday, November 24, 2012 at his home in Topeka, Kansas after a two year battle with multiple myeloma cancer.
Richard was born on September 10, 1941 in Bedford, Iowa, the son of Elmer Moellenberndt and Zelma (Bix) Moellenberndt. Richard grew up in Gravity, Iowa, graduating as salutatorian from Gravity Public High School in 1959. Later he attended Northwest Missouri State University located in Maryville, Missouri in 1964 with a B.S. in Accounting and Mathematics. In 1968, he received an M.A. in Accounting and Mathematical Statistics and a Ph.D in Accounting in 1973 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He received his CPA designation in 1981.
Richard accepted a position as a professor of accounting at Wichita State University located in Wichita, Kansas where he met his wife Kathleen (Beck) Moellenberndt.
Richard and Kathleen were married in Wichita, Kansas on May 31, 1975. They later moved to Topeka, Kansas where Richard accepted a position as a professor of accounting in the School of Business at Washburn University.
Dr. Moellenberndt found it particularly rewarding to see accounting graduates obtain successful careers. Richard was personally dedicated to teaching and helping his students.
A significant mark of his tenure at Washburn University was the establishment of the Mu Omicron Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi International (professional business organization for students).
Due to his illness, Richard retired from Washburn University in January 2012 after completing 35 years of teaching and obtained the Professor Emeritus status upon retirement.
Richard enjoyed spending time with his family, baseball, and maintaining his two acre lawn with over 80 trees which he personally planted. He frequently attended classic auto shows and enjoyed his 1954 Farmall Super MTA tractor which he purchased to remind him of his time spent growing up on his family's farm in Iowa. He had a great love for the outdoors.
Richard is survived by his wife, Kathleen and their daughter Sarah Amber Moellenberndt along with his sister Eleanor (Moellenberndt) Shaffer and her husband Loran Shaffer. He was preceded in death by his sister Sharon (Moellenberndt) Stephens and his parents.
Visitation will be held at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, Topeka on Friday, Nov. 30 from 5-7 pm. Funeral services will be held at First Christian Church, 1880 SW Gage Blvd, on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 10 am. Burial will follow at the Mount Hope Cemetery.
