Richard Dean Pankratz, 73, passed away in Topeka on Saturday, September 21, 2013.
He was born to Harry and Ruth Pankratz on December 31, 1939 in Hillsboro, KS. He is a graduate of Hillsboro High School and Tabor College in Hillsboro. He received his master's degree in history from Emporia State University in 1968. He worked as a school teacher from 1961-1970 in Nebraska and Kansas, teaching English and History.
In 1970, he began his career with the Kansas State Historical Society where he served for 34 years. He was Director of Historic Preservation and Cultural Resources until his retirement in 2004.
He was a member of Cornerstone Community Church in Topeka. He was saved at the age of 11 and baptized in 1951 at the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church.
He was united in marriage to Phyllis Reimer on January 27, 1973. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Kristi Pankratz, Topeka; a sister, Ruby (Paul) Sjodin, Canyon Lake, TX; a brother, Herb (Trudy) Pankratz, Abilene, KS; sister-in-law, Karen (Leon) Neufeld, Fairview, OK; nieces and nephews and many other relatives and a cherished church family.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at Cornerstone Community Church, Topeka. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka.
Richard will lie in state after 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 24, 2013, at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, where the family will greet friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m.
