Robert "Poo" Mayfield was born rowdy, on November 25, 1951. He grew up a Huck Finn in Everest, KS with his brothers Gene & Paul.
After high school, Robert joined the Marines, and received a medical discharge in 1972. He spent his young adulthood as a cable lineman, and enjoyed travelling the states as the then-new technology expanded. After several years, wives, and children, he settled in Topeka, KS as a courier, spending most of his free time outdoors in the garden, fishing at any given lake, playing country music on his guitar, or playing with his grandchildren. Monday evenings would usually find him watching football or wrestling, and he had been a sports fan since childhood, when he & Paul would watch TV with their Grandma & Grandpa Jelly.
Robert and Nancy Hieronymus were married May 13, 2004, and he quickly welcomed her eight children as his own. Nancy also welcomed his children Matt and Rachael, and they enjoyed summer visits for many years. He and Nancy often made long camping trips where they would practice duets for the CrossCountry Band of NE Kansas, or jam with fellow country-rebels on holiday weekends. If they weren't jammin' they were dancin' the Brown County Shuffle. They also enjoyed old western movies, books, and of course, birthday parties! All who knew him knew he was generous, and would help others anyway he could. They usually had to tolerate his strong opinions and late-night jam sessions, but nonetheless, he was a saving grace to countless folks in need. He loved his friends and family "with his whole heart and half-a-kidney!" As it turns out, "Poo" gave up half a lung for his wild ways, and lost his battle with cancer on March 8, 2014, at St. Francis Health Center in Topeka. At 62 years old, he only wished that everyone could know Life, Liberty, and Happiness, a red-blooded American through and through.
He is survived by loving wife, Nancy L. (Hieronymus) Mayfield; his brother, Paul (Millie) Mayfield; children, Matthew (Jamie) Mayfield and Rachael (Jason) Little; and countless grandchildren, family, and musician friends. He was preceded in death by parents James Isaac and Deloris (Ingels) Mayfield; brother, Isaac "Gene" Eugene Mayfield; infant sister Barbara Joan, and his grandson Michael Moon.
The family would like to thank Dove Cremation for their services, and Robert will be buried at Round Mound cemetery near Atchison, KS at a later date.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, March 15 at 11:00a.m., Oakland United Methodist Church, 801 NE Chester, Topeka, KS. In lieu of flowers, please consider needs of the family.
