Robert E."Bob" Towne

Robert E. "Bob" Towne, 88, Auburn, passed away on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at the Colmery-O'Neil Veterans Administration Hospital.

Bob was born March 16, 1921 in Auburn, the son of Harry R. and Alice M. (Attebury) Towne. He graduated from Auburn High School and following graduation, toured the country's Rodeo circuit.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 30th Infantry Division. He was part of the Normandy Invasion, 2nd Wave at Omaha Beach and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star. He was called back to active duty during the Korean War and was sent to Ft. Bragg to be a Drill Sergeant.

He raised Registered Black Angus Cattle in the Auburn area. He was a member of the Kansas Livestock Association, Kansas Farm Bureau, the American Angus Association, and an honorary member of the Kansas Angus Association, and a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church.

Bob married Jean Young after the war. She died in 1991 as a result of a farm accident. He married Kathryn L. Swartz on November 27, 1992. She survives. Other survivors include step-son, Mark (Mary)Pfeiler, Goff, and their children, Jason, Topeka and Joseph, U.S. Air Force; step-daughter, Phoebe (Baird) Ritter and their children, Meredith, Spencer, and Abby, Mishawaka, IN; nephews, Robert Todd (Janeen) Williams, and their children, Rae Ann and Paige, Syracuse; John (Karen) Young, Overland Park; nieces, Julia Wilson and her son, Seth, Seneca; Carole (Wayne) Underwood, Topeka; and Diana (James) Hope, Destin, FL. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Dick Towne and Harry Towne Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 26, 2009 at the Auburn United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Shawnee Center Cemetery in Wakarusa. Bob will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road, after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday and visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
